FASHION NEEDS AND CONSUMPTION -
PERSONAL ASPECT

Fashion for me is like everything..though obvious as I am in this field and have chosen it as my career.

I like to be in trend, be up to date of the new styles and be fashionable.

But…I do not shop a lot…

I do shop and even love it…But I do not purchase in bulk, nor do I buy unwanted stuff that would just occupy the corner of my wardrobe. I make use of every product I buy.

Even I am not a minimalistic person. Though after watching some inspirational documentaries, I wish to be such. But it is really a very difficult change to incorporate.

Observing the condition of our Earth and knowing about how Fast fashion is impacting our climate and the surroundings, I have realized that it is very important for us to understand the difference between NEED and WANT. Needs are like " Roti, Kapda, Makaan". Relating it to fashion, needs are the essential items. We need to buy the limited stuffs which is essential for our living. On the other hand, Wants are our desire for something to buy which leads to buying more and affecting the climate.

I do not like to keep a bundle of clothes that I don’t wear or not willing to wear again in my life. It just messes up the wardrobe and hides the good clothes. That’s the reason I am guilty to have a section of some Indian clothes (suits, kurtis, salwars) which are just unused now. The reason I need to buy them were because of my college where I pursued graduation. We were supposed to wear only cotton and khadi suits. Now as I am free from that, I don’t wish to wear that. I think Indian clothing doesn’t suits me much. I don’t’ feel satisfied and happy when I wear it. Or maybe I am used of western clothing since childhood. Neither those clothes are very old nor have they lost their quality, so I don’t wish to donate them so early. Every time I look at that section, I think I may use it some day.

I don’t mind in repeating my clothes in normal occasions like college, travelling, neighborhood, etc. But, for special occasions like festivals, parties, I prefer buying new clothes. Exception, if I have some new stuff, that I haven’t worn much, I avoid shopping.

A unique style with an attractive color available in low price is my weakness. I buy it with no special reason.

Now, it's a high time to think over it, and draw a line between our Needs and Want.

  1. In today's life wants are over powering human needs. Weekly launches of new stock is a trap and we are blindly falling into it because the society we live in has set standard bars for everyone. I could relate to your wardrobe story though! I believe people will opt for mindful consumerism someday soon.
