CLIMATE CHANGE
IMPACT OF FAST FASHION
ON CLIMATE CHANGE
In today's time, it's not easy to ignore the fact of the extreme impact that fashion has on climate change.
Unfortunately, fashion industry is the second most polluting industry after petroleum.
If we look at the statistics, the climate change will not just effect our future Earth or generation, but it is being effecting now.
Effects of Climate Change :
- The ice caps are shrinking,
- water shortages are happening,
- sea levels are rising
- and the weather has become less predictable than ever before.
The Earth, the surroundings, the environment we see now is not the same as what our ancestors would see then.
Let's talk about fashion !!!
The FAST FASHION, the current trend that we all are following at present, is destroying the climate.
It is growing day by day and now has become the 'need' for consumer greed.
It encourages and pushes the consumer to buy frequently and the latest products to stay on trend.
There was an era, when only 2 or 4 seasons existed in fashion. People would buy maximum on those seasons . But now , surprisingly there are 52 seasons. This encourages consumers to buy more.
The denim jeans we wear, requires 7,500 - 10,000 liters of water to produce. We would have never thought of this while buying a collection of denim jeans.
We tend to buy more, but we wear less. Our half of or more than half of wardrobe is piled up with unwanted clothes. So, then we donate them to the needy, or throw away. We actually don't know where our clothes go. Many a times, they end up in the sea or landfills, which is very harmful. It contributes to the overwhelming amount of waste we see in landfills across the globe.
The fabric dyes pollute water bodies, with devastating effects on aquatic life and drinking water. It releases thousands upon thousands of microplastic fibers into the environment.
It can go on to seriously underwater ecosystems.
As, Every Problem Has a Solution, We as a Responsible Individual has a duty to find out a way out to reduce the impact we create on Climate Change.
To buy less, to buy that we require.
“Secondhand clothing is giving clothes a second life and it's slowing down that fast-fashion cycle,” says Fee Gilfeather, a sustainable fashion expert.
Instead of looking for an excuse to buy more, we can refresh our wardrobes with our siblings, friends, etc., by swaping our clothes with them. It give us a new collection without spending on fast fashion.
There are number of ways to save our environment, we the people have the ability and power to change it and save our Earth.
FEW WAYS TO SAVE OUR PLANET :
- Buy less, wear more.
- Pick up sustainable clothes
- Swap your clothes
- Think before buying, not being a mindless consumer
- Look up for sustainable brands
- Do not throw away old clothes, reuse them.

The impact of clothing industry on environment go beyond emissions. Dyes used to produce toxic chemicals pollute waterways. Gathering the materials for wood based fabrics like rayon, modal and viscose contributes to deforestation.
ReplyDeleteRight now, the main problem is the volume of clothing that is being produced, which is largely driven by our consumption habits. As clothes become cheaper-and also often cheaper in quality-consumers have slowly lost the ability to repair their clothes. The results, paradoxically, is increased consumer spending on lower-quality clothing.
Thank you for sharing some tips and suggestion that how we can adopt in our life and bring that change
ReplyDeleteIt's really sad that bcoz of our wants and this fast fashion our environment is at a miserable stage
